Who We Are

Bridging state-of-the-art AI and practical science.

PULSE: Scientific Machine Learning Lab is a research lab in the Department of Scientific Computing at Florida State University, founded in 2022 and led by Principal Investigator Olmo Zavala-Romero. We build machine learning models for ocean forecasting and biomedical data — from predicting the lifetime of Loop Current eddies in the Gulf of Mexico to classifying disease from medical imaging. The name expands to Predictive Understanding and Learning in Scientific Environments.

Our philosophy

The principles that drive the daily research.

Uniting realms

Too often, machine learning researchers and domain scientists speak different languages. We act as the bridge. By embedding deep learning directly into scientific workflows, we unite distinct realms of the scientific community to solve complex problems together.

Open reproducibility

Science hidden behind closed doors stalls progress. We default to open-source code, public datasets, and containerised environments so our work is reproducible by anyone, anywhere.
